How do I know if my developer did a good job?

From my experience at Codeable but also from talking to people at WordPress Meetups, family, and friends, I’ve found people don’t know how to judge a developer’s work.

This is a super understandable position – web clients know their own product and business deeply, but why would they know about development standards?

The field of web development is such a weird space because, although we do have some established standards (W3C, WCAG, various platform coding standards), they aren’t enforced in the same way as something like building standards are. There’s no third-party group compelling developers to keep their work above some sort of quality floor. (With the exception of legal requirements for select sites to follow WCAG guidelines.) So we broadly operate on conventions and norms.

Additionally, we all had different paths to becoming web developers (college vs bootcamp vs self-taught) and there’s a wide range in technical abilities of those who call themselves WordPress developers. Because of these factors, many devs don’t even realize they aren’t producing what myself and others would personally consider high-quality work.

Many of the standards that developers should be upholding are not even visible/noticeable to the client anyways. So how can a client even know if their developer produced solid work?

This is a work-in-progress, but I’ve created a checklist for clients who need to evaluate the work their developer has done. Please reach out if you have feedback or questions! I’d love to know if you end up using this.
